Planning & Credentials

What Do CFP® and CIMA® Designations Mean?

At Sopris Wealth Advisors, we believe your financial future deserves the highest level of care, strategy, and expertise. That’s why the advisors on our team hold advanced, industry-respected designations: Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) and Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA®).

These credentials represent two distinct yet complementary areas of specialization, comprehensive financial planning and sophisticated investment management, and reflect our commitment to helping clients navigate both sides of the wealth equation.

Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®)

The CFP® certification is the most widely recognized credential in personal financial planning. CFP® professionals are trained to help individuals and families organize, protect, and grow their wealth with a personalized, long-term approach.

Focus Areas:

  • Financial Planning
Creating comprehensive financial plans, including goal setting, and tracking progress over time.
  • Investment Planning
Helping clients understand and make informed investment decisions aligned with their risk tolerance, goals, and time horizons.
  • Retirement Planning
Advising on retirement savings strategies, income distribution, and plan design to support long-term financial security.
  • Tax Planning
Minimizing tax liability and integrating tax-efficient strategies across the financial plan.
  • Risk Management and Insurance Planning
Identifying and mitigating financial risks through appropriate insurance solutions and contingency planning.
  • Estate Planning
Assisting with the design and implementation of estate plans to ensure wealth is preserved and distributed according to the client’s wishes.

Training Requirements:

  • Completion of CFP Board registered coursework and a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Successful passage of the comprehensive CFP® exam
  • 6,000 hours of professional experience
  • Adherence to a fiduciary standard and Code of Ethics
  • Ongoing continuing education

Less than 20% of U.S. professionals in investment advisory, brokerage, or wealth management roles hold the CFP® designation, making it a highly respected benchmark in the industry.

Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA®)

The CIMA® designation is a specialized investment management credential, designed for advisors who serve high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and institutions—or for those who bring institutional-caliber investment strategies to individual investors.

  • Portfolio Construction
Designing portfolios that balance risk and return while aligning with specific client goals and constraints.
  • Asset Allocation
Implementing strategic and tactical asset allocation strategies across asset classes to maximize long-term performance.
  • Risk and Performance Analysis
Evaluating volatility, drawdown, upside/downside capture, and other key performance metrics to guide portfolio decisions.
  • Manager Selection and Due Diligence
Conducting rigorous screening, evaluation, and monitoring of third-party investment managers and strategies.
  • Behavioral Finance Integration
Accounting for investor biases and decision-making tendencies in portfolio design and rebalancing.
  • Ongoing Oversight and Optimization
Continuously monitoring portfolios for rebalancing opportunities, style drift, risk exposure, and alignment with investment policy statements.

Training Requirements:

  • Coursework through an AACSB-accredited business school (such as Yale or Chicago Booth)
  • A rigorous certification exam
  • Minimum of three years’ investment experience
  • Adherence to ethical and professional standards
  • Continuing education to maintain certification

Fewer than 2% of financial professionals hold the CIMA® designation, making it one of the most advanced and exclusive certifications in the field.

Why It Matters

At Sopris Wealth Advisors, both of our advisors are deeply trained and experienced in financial planning and investment management, ensuring your entire financial picture is thoughtfully aligned—from everyday decisions to long-term goals.
